SLIMKID3 & DJ NU-MARK
Rapper Slimkid3 (Real name Trevant Jermaine Hardson) was one of the founding four members of the acclaimed hip-hop group The Pharcyde, alongside fellow lyricists Bootie Brown, Fatlip, and Imani. During their commercial peak (The early to late 1990s) Slimkid3 and The Pharcyde cemented their place in the annals of hip-hop history with two highly influential alternative rap albums: 1992's Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde, and 1995's Labcabincalifornia, both heralded for their production values (The group has worked with legendary producers such as J Dilla, J-Sw!ft, and Diamond D, among others.) innovative rhymes, and distinct moods unique to the then-current hip-hop landscape. (Bizarre Ride was playful and irreverent, while Labcabin was mature and introspective.) The group's original lineup would go through major changes near the end of the 1990s, with both Fatlip and Slimkid3 exiting to engage on solo careers. (Imani and Bootie Brown would resume as a duo.)
Parallel to Slimkid3's career at the time was DJ Nu-Mark, (Real name Mark Potsic) a member of the similar alternative hip-hop group Jurassic 5. (Who in addition to Nu-Mark consisted of rappers Chali 2Na, Marc 7, Zaakir, and Akil, and fellow DJ Cut Chemist.) Nu-Mark and Jurassic 5 were also highly influential to hip-hop, receiving critical and commercial acclaim for releases like their 1998 self-titled debut, and 2000's Quality Control. Despite their increased success, Jurassic 5 would fall victim to the same problem that The Pharcyde had, when Cut Chemist left the group to pursue a solo career. The group continued to tour and released one more album before disbanding for solo careers, eventually regrouping in 2014 for a summer tour. (Nu-Mark would find new acclaim with his 2012 solo production debut Broken Sunlight.)
Slimkid3 and DJ Nu-Mark first collaborated in 2011, on the EP Another Day Another Dollar, which received widespread online acclaim from outlets like HipHopDX, OkayPlayer, and DJ Booth. A full-length effort seemed inevitable. Years later, the two had regrouped, and teamed up with legacy hip-hop label Delicious Vinyl, to release the aptly titled Slimkid3 & DJ Nu-Mark, a new studio collaboration which built on Another Day Another Dollar's successes. Slimkid3 & DJ Nu-Mark features soulful and jazzy production harkening back to 90s hip-hop's glory days courtesy of Nu-Mark, providing the foundation for Slimkid3's profoundly warm, and coolly observant lyrics and rhymes. Guest spots from contemporaries like Del The Funky Homosapien, Murs, Diamond D, and more can also be heard within.
