CZARFACE
(INSPECTAH DECK / 7L & ESOTERIC)
It was a mutual love of both underground hip-hop and classic comic book aesthetics that inspired Wu-Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck and Boston duo 7L & Esoteric to come together to create Czarface. As a trio, they reached great critical acclaim for their skills in crafting classic boom-bap hip-hop, (Driven by Deck & Eso’s witty and acerbic rhymes, and 7L’s nostalgic beat production) while drawing heavily from comic book iconography, as well as 1980s imagery, science fiction, and even professional wrestling.
Czarface made their debut in 2013 with a self-titled album, featuring an array of acclaimed guests, including Ghostface Killah, Action Bronson, Oh No, Cappadonna, and many more. The album earned them heavy praise from publications like XXL, HipHopDX, Q, and others, as well as numerous listings as one of 2013’s best albums.
2 years later, and the trio have returned to show that the first Czarface album was by no means a one-off. Every Hero Needs A Villain is the group’s latest release, and has shown to be even tighter an album than the first, and a truly deluxe package. Deck, Eso, and 7L now find themselves in the company of guests like MF Doom, GZA, Method Man, Large Professor, Juju of The Beatnuts, RA The Rugged Man, and Meyhem Lauren. More than just a simple album release however, the CD and vinyl versions of Every Hero Needs A Villain come bundled with extensive liner notes and artwork by Gilberto Aguirre Mata (El Ultimo Codice), and L’amour Supreme. (Mishka NYC) To top it all off, also included is an exclusive Czarface comic book, written by Esoteric himself, with artwork by L’amour Supreme.
