Many a rapper merely talks the talk in writing lyrics about pain, anguish, and suffering, but the lyrics of New York rapper Chris Palko, better known as Cage, are defined by genuine real-world experiences and tragedy. The early years of his life were marked by parental abuse, drug addiction, attempts at suicide, and a brief stay in a mental institution, and ultimately served to inspire his paranoid, maniacal, and overwhelmingly dark rhymes. These same rhymes and lyrics would make Cage a revered figure in the world of underground rap.
Entering the hip-hop world at the age of 18, his early career was marked by guest appearances and associations with other heroes of the underground like KMD, K-Solo, Necro, Godfather Don, and one of his most frequent collaborators; El-P. (Whom he would further partner with in the hip-hop collective The Weathermen, with Aesop Rock, and various others.) in the late 90s he would release the songs "Radiohead" and "Agent Orange" to great critical acclaim, and find minor mainstream success in the group Smut Peddlers, whose album Porn Again managed to breach the Billboard 200.
His biggest success would come with the release of his solo debut, Movies For The Blind, which cracked the Billboard 200 once again, and to this day is considered a dark and chilling masterpiece of underground hip-hop, an extremely important work of horrorcore rap, and would help inspire the likes of similarly disturbed rappers like Tyler, The Creator. Movies For The Blind would ultimately help bring Cage to a wider audience, and he has since worked alongside alternative & underground heavy-hitters like RJD2, DJ Shadow, Aesop Rock, Camu Tao, Kid Cudi, Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, actor Shia LaBeouf, and more.
2013 now sees the release of Kill The Architect, Cage's first collection of original solo material in 4 years. It also sees him return for the first time in years to Eastern Conference Records, the imprint through which Cage released Movies For The Blind, and other albums. Produced by longtime partner & collaborator DJ Mighty Mi, with additional production from Mr. Bomb Camp, Slugworth, and Aaron Perez, Cage's blend of deranged and foreboding rhymes haven't lost their spark in the intervening years, and still manage to shock and astound, 22 years into his career. Kill The Architect is now shipping on compact disc, and coming soon on vinyl LP from Traffic Entertainment.
